A student from the University of Portsmouth has discovered a new species of mammal which lived 145 million years ago.
Benjamin Weston, who studies animal and plant fossils, made the incredible discovery while searching at Durlston Bay near Swanage in Dorset.
He came across a fossilised lower jaw belonging to a completely new species of multituberculate, an extinct group of small mammals known for their distinct teeth.
The newly found species sheds light on the early mammals that coexisted with dinosaurs.
The jaw, measuring 16.5 millimetres in length, has pointed incisors at the front, followed by unique premolars.
This finding marks the first discovery of its kind in Swanage since the Victorian era, confirming it as a new species.
