The next total lunar eclipse in Hong Kong may give locals a chance to witness a 'blood moon' phenomenon, if the weather conditions are right.

This upcoming eclipse is set to start at 11.26pm on September 7, when the moon enters a partial shadow known as the 'penumbra'.

The total eclipse, where the moon will be completely engulfed in a total shadow called the 'umbra', will begin at 1.30am the next day.

During the maximum eclipse at 2.12am, the moon will appear to have a dull red hue, caused by the scattering of blue light component and refraction of red light onto the lunar surface.

According to the Observatory, the whole event can be observed with the naked eye in places that offer an unobstructed view to the south and southwest, provided that the weather allows.
The lunar eclipse process will conclude at 4.57am on September 8, when the moon exits the penumbra, marking the end of the phenomenon.
The last lunar eclipse witnessed in Hong Kong was in October 2023, with the next total lunar eclipse expected to occur on March 3 next year.
